How Much Food I need
Toco Toucans consume a variety of fruits to receive the majority of its required nutrients, however also consume insects and eggs of small/medium birds as their source of protein.
|Toco Toucans (Piciformes)||Energy Value (680g toucan)||Formula||Calculation|
|Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)||9.28kJ/h||BMR=0.085(1.10)m0.705||=0.085(1.10)(680g)0.705=9.28|
|Daily Energy Expenditure (DEE)||23.3kJ/day||DEE=2.5 * BMR||=2.5* 9.28|
|Energy Required for Growth||20.88kJ/h||Growth= MER*1.5 where MER= BMR*1.5 therefore Growth= BMR* 2.25||=9.28*2.25=20.88|
|Energy Required for Reproduction||11.97kJ/h||Reproduction= BMR*1.29 (needs 29% more BMR )||=9.28*1.29= 11.97|
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the basic amount of energy used by the organism at complete rest but not sleeping. This rate is usually measured as amount of kJ per hour. (kJ/h) As shown above, Toco Toucans have a BMR of 9.28kJ/h assuming the mass is 680g.17
DEE (Daily Energy Expenditure) is the amount of energy that an organism needs to breath, circulate blood, digest food and be physically active. As shown above, Toco Toucans have a DEE of 23.3.kJ/day assuming the above BMR.17
Energy Required for Growth is the amount of energy needed for growing animals (Young to Mature Adult). As shown above, Toco Toucans need 20.88kJ/h (which is an extra 11.6kJ/h on top of BMR) to ensure healthy growth, assuming the above BMR.
Energy Required for Reproduction is the amount of energy needed during the pregnancy. As shown above, Toco Toucans need 11.9kJ/h (which is 2.62kJ/h more than BMR) to ensure a health pregnancy.
Food Consumption to meet energy needs (Kiwifruit= 43kcal = 180kJ)
Toco Toucans only need to consume 9.28/180 =5.15% of a fruit/ hour to satisfy their BMR. Additional crude protein (from insects/ eggs) may be included when needed.
